What might be an alternative to the police? Given the crisis of police killings of Black and Brown people, communities are demanding alternative approaches to health and safety. Want to hear how we challenge the notion that policing keeps us safe? Critical Resistance Oakland regularly offers this workshop that looks at the role and history of policing in the U.S., the way it has impacted various communities, and how people have resisted and challenged its inherent violence. The workshop traces the roots of modern police back to slave patrols and puts today’s patterns of police brutality in a broader context of structural racism. This workshop also goes over how we can reduce our reliance on policing by highlighting the various ways that building up community strength and practices lead to true safety that does not depend on law enforcement.
Critical Resistance is offering this workshop for SURJ Bay Area as a way to deepen our understanding of the connections between policing and white supremacy in this country. As we continue to support the movement against police terror regionally and nationally, it is crucial that we tune into analysis coming from organizations like Critical Resistance that are at the forefront of this fight. We highly encourage folks to attend!
