SURJ Stands With Standing Rock

This morning, hundreds gathered outside San Francisco's City Hall for a sunrise ceremony of prayer, song and solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota as part of a national day of massive action against the Dakota Access Pipeline. The group then marched to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to demand permit denial and the completion of a full environmental impact statement. Here are some images from the day. Accompanying the photos are additional suggestions for action, many previously outlined here.

Protesters faced possible arrest by blocking the entrance to The Army Corps of Engineers. The SFPD chose not to arrest anyone today.

Below is Pennie Opal of Idle No More. During the rally, she and one other were actually invited into The Army Corps of Engineers to talk about their objection to the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Voice your opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline by contacting North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple: 701-328-2200. Leave a message, calling on him to respect the treaties and withdraw the militarized forces.

Also, contact the Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier, Sheriff: 701-667-3330. Ask why a private pipeline requires militarized police from seven states; request that they demilitarize their tactics and refrain from mass arrests, macing, clubbing, hooding, strip searching, and armed confrontation with unarmed peaceful water protectors engaged in constitutionally protected civil disobedience.
