Anti-Racism 101: How to Show Up for Racial Justice (June 2021)

6/17/2021

Thursday, June 17, 2021• 6PM-7:30PM • Online
“Anti-racism work is not self-improvement work for white people. It doesn’t end when white people feel better about what they’ve done. It ends when Black people are staying alive and they have their liberation.” — Rachel Cargle (Author, Speaker, Activist)
Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) Bay Area presents “Anti-Racism 101: How to Show Up for Racial Justice,” an introductory workshop offering guidance about how to move from learning to taking action as a white anti-racist. This workshop is led by a team of white co-facilitators from SURJ’s Basebuilding Committee, to advance SURJ’s mission of organizing, mobilizing and educating white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability. We bring deep experience in teaching, coaching, and facilitation, and are united by a common commitment to learn, empower, and participate in social change. While white people are the target audience of this experience, anyone is welcome to join.

We’ll start by understanding systemic racism as a system of advantage rooted in the beliefs and institutionalization of white supremacy, rather than a product of individuals who are “good” or “bad.” Attendees will have opportunities to engage in small-group dialogue and plan for taking at least one action in support of racial justice within their personal spheres of influence.
This workshop welcomes anyone who would like to participate, but it is especially designed for white people who are:
  • In the early stages of exploring what it means to be a white anti-racist
  • Seeking to grow their skills in analyzing and discussing the effects of racism
  • Feeling compelled to take action to create a more just world
Accessibility:
