Perfectionism has been identified as a characteristic of white supremacy culture.  You may have an unrelenting inner voice that perpetually tells you to work harder, but that same voice may tell you that your effort is never good enough.  In this session we will examine common traits of perfectionism and how they can actually prevent us from building the relationships we want in doing racial justice work.  We'll earn ways to curb this common cultural pattern.

Join the SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) community as we take a deep dive into the Defund movement and the continuing work to redefine community safety. Take collective action, reflect personally and, in community, learn more! This session is one installation in a series SURJ will offer this Summer to invite more white people into the movement to Defund police. Communities of color in the Bay Area and across the country are making clear asks for white folks to show up and speak out against the violence of policing and to support alternatives to policing rooted in care, resources, and racial justice. . We are urging all to join in a Human Billboard on Saturday, 6/19, from 11-12, by the Grand Lake Theater, to show up in alliance with our Black and POC partners. They are leading a key campaign to press the Oakland City Council to set a budget that funds human needs & opportunities—not one that robs communities in order to allow continued state violence against people of color.

Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) Bay Area presents “Anti-Racism 101: How to Show Up for Racial Justice,” an introductory workshop offering guidance about how to move from learning to taking action as a white anti-racist. This workshop is led by a team of white co-facilitators from SURJ’s Basebuilding Committee, to advance SURJ’s mission of organizing, mobilizing and educating white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability. We bring deep experience in teaching, coaching, and facilitation, and are united by a common commitment to learn, empower, and participate in social change. While white people are the target audience of this experience, anyone is welcome to join.

SURJ Bay Area’s Youth and Family committee offers this five-part workshop series for anyone who is loving, nurturing, caring for, and raising up white children. This is an opportunity to continue and deepen your work from the Interrupting White Supremacy at The Root workshop. (please attend the workshop on June 2 or watch a recording, link available upon registration). We will examine how white supremacy and white racial socialization applies to our lives as individuals and adult allies to young folks. We’ll identify the ways that we perpetuate white supremacy within our family structures and practice disrupting this with each other.
