Taina Vargas-Edmond, Executive Director of Initiate Justice, and Dorsey Nunn, Executive Director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children/All of Us or None, will be in conversation with Tim Wise at this live taping of his national podcast. These two leaders in the forefront of policy and advocacy work on behalf of incarcerated Californians, the formerly-incarcerated, and their families will look at recent victories and efforts currently underway.

​About Taina Vargas-Edmond, Initiate Justice
Taina founded Initiate Justice with her husband Richard Vargas-Edmond in September 2016. Prior to creating Initiate Justice, she worked as the Statewide Advocacy Coordinator with Essie Justice Group, State Campaigner with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, and as a Field Representative for the California State Assembly. ​

​About Dorsey Nunn, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children/All of Us or None
Dorsey is a leading expert with over 40 years of professional experience in criminal justice reform. He is the first formerly incarcerated director of a public interest law office in California. Under his leadership, LSPC has made significant advances including legal victories including the Ashker lawsuit that ended long term solitary confinement in California, and policy victories including numerous Ban the Box laws and the RISE act, the biggest drug sentencing reform passed by the CA legislature in recent history. ​​

Parking and Transportation
The church is located at Harrison and 27th in Oakland.  The closest BART station is 19th Street BART which is .6 miles away from the church. There is a small parking lot in back as well as street parking, however, if you are driving, please try to carpool and arrive early to leave time to find a spot.

Accessibility
There are several entrances to the church building. The front entrance with all the steps leads right into the sanctuary. The one in the back parking lot is the wheelchair accessible entrance. We will have at least one greeter in the back and one in the front directing people to the appropriate entrance. From the accessible entrance, follow the hallway around to the left and enter the sanctuary at the front. The ADA compliant bathroom, which accommodates mobility devices, is also near the accessible entrance and will be well marked. If you need special parking accommodations, we will do our best: please let us know by emailing us info@surjbayarea.org by 5:00 pm on Sunday April 8th.

Scents
SURJ endeavors to offer a scent-free environment; however the church is not yet totally scent-free, so we cannot guarantee an entirely scent-free space. We will have a scent free section and there will be “fragrance-free” soap in the bathrooms. We ask everyone to please arrive fragrance-free to support access for folks who experience multiple chemical sensitivities and allergies. This means using only body products and laundry detergent that say “unscented” or “fragrance-free” on the label and do not have scented ingredients.

ASL
ASL interpretation will be provided as long as at least 1 person lets us know by email at info@surjbayarea.org that ASL interpretation is needed by 5:00 pm on Sunday April 8th.

Restrooms
Restrooms are currently labeled in a gender-nonbinary way; all restrooms are available to anyone, regardless of lived or perceived gender identity. We ask that folks choose the restroom that is right for them and that no one question a person’s chosen restroom.
