Phonebank for Prop 15, Schools and Communities First Support Prop 15/Schools & Communities First — join a phonebank with SF Rising and SURJ Bay Area to talk with voters about supporting Prop 15. We have a historic opportunity in CA this November. Passing Prop 15 will reclaim resources from corporations who haven't been paying their fair share of property taxes and move $12 billion a year to schools and local community services, particularly impacting communities of color. There is a massive coalition of groups led by people of color championing Prop 15, and SURJ is mobilizing our base to be part of this critical campaign. Corporate special interests are fighting this hard, so to pass Prop 15, we all need to come together to talk to as many voters as possible about why they should vote YES. No experience required, just sign up and you'll be trained and supported at each phonebank. Volunteer for YES on Prop 15: Monday September 14 • 5:00 – 7:30 pm Tuesday September 15 • 1:00 – 4:00 pm Wednesday September 16 • 5:00 – 7:30 pm Thursday September 17th • 5:00 – 7:30 pm Thursday, September 17 • 1:00 – 2:00 pm Examining Latinidad at the Crossroads of Race, Culture, and COVID-19 In this SpeakOut virtual event, leading scholar-practitioner and bold national voice on racial justice, Dr. Michael Benitez Jr. discusses the ways Latinxs in the U.S. experience long-standing systemic social inequities. He’ll also look at how culture and racial politics such as colorism and anti-Black racism intersect among Latinxs, and how Latinx people experience, navigate, and negotiate the U.S. in the midst of COVID and racial unrest. Tickets $5 - $20 sliding scale. Register to watch live or later. More info and tickets here. Large group and small group dialogues are grounded in philosophical principles and understandings related to theories of social change and anti-racist white identity development. SIGN A PETITION:Justice for Daniel Prude - Newly-released police bodycam footage shows Daniel Prude, a 41-year-old Black man in need of mental health assistance, was murdered by police in Rochester, NY, in March. Color of Change is demanding Rochester DA Sandra Doorley arrest and charge the recently-suspended police officers who murdered Daniel. Trained medical and mental health professionals—not cops—should respond to medical calls. Learn more and sign the petition here. The SURJ Rochester chapter is also asking for support in their efforts to get justice for Daniel Prude. Learn more on their Facebook page and website. National Call to Action for Jacob Blake – On August 23, Jacob Blake was shot by Kenosha, WI, police officers at least seven times at close range—as his three sons watched.
